Here’s the latest from our Sustainable Cooking Contest

Another few weeks have flown by and we’ve seen great experiences and recipes come in to our Mastering the Art of Sustainable Cooking contest. The contest is a platform for sharing ways to save energy in the kitchen, reuse items and leftovers, and choose more sustainable ingredients. Our first round-up of winners was summarized in our first contest update post. Here are a few of the stand-out entries and prize winners from the last month:

Adam from San Fran is all about scavenging treasure hunting through his kitchen cupboards. He has figured out how to use things he already has through meal-time experimentation.

Across the bay, Rachel gives the low-down on CSAs (even if you think it’s too much for you to possibly cook). Over in the Garden State, Catherine reminds us to use local wine along with our local food recipes.

Bettina in DC blew us away with a handful of fabulous tips and recipes. One of our favorites is a guide for Getting to Know Your Farmer’s Market. This first group of winners is getting subscriptions to EatingWell Magazine.

CJ in Texas uses bright reusable bags instead of plastic when she sends her kids off to school. She won colorful carbon neutral utensils from Guyot Designs.

Thomas shared a recipe and gorgeous photos from his foray into marmalade making with Meyer lemons from his first citrus tree. He’ll be reducing his “forkprint” with bamboo utensils from To-Go Ware.

The contest is slated to run through December 2009. Anyone can share their sustainable cooking experiences through the “conservation tips” branch of our website. Entrants complete one or more of 25 cooking-related tips, share their stories and photos, and (if you’re in the US) compete to win prizes like five Amazon Kindle DXs. (As our friends at Treehugger reported, the Kindle is actually “greener than the printed word.”).

How do you make sure you’re up for the Kindles? Get votes! You can vote for your favorites by clicking the “I like this” link. The final winners are determined through a combination of voting and a judging panel that includes Alice Waters, Bill McKibben, and Gary Hirshberg.

Next week’s winners will receive prizes from Stonyfield Farms and EatingWell Cookbooks. Go ahead, participating is cake! Join us at the contest site.
